Weights and Measures

Weights and Measures

The Weights and Measures Department enforces all Massachusetts General Laws and Regulations pertaining to weights and measures including the regulation of trade, unit pricing, and price verification. Weighing and measuring devices used by local establishments include automatic check-out systems (scanners), taximeters, home heating oil truck meters, gasoline pumps, supermarket and deli scales, manufacturing and shipping scales, apothecary and jewelry scales, and troy weights. The Weights and Measures Department guarantees the accuracy of these devices through mandatory inspections and regulatory tests and procedures, inspecting all devices for accuracy and correctness. Weights and Measures investigates complaints of short weight, price misrepresentation and use of illegal or non-conforming devices and may issue civil citations for non-compliance of any weights and measures law, documenting all related complaints as needed.

The Northern Middlesex Council of Governments handles the Weights and Measures inspections for the communities of Billerica, Chelmsford, Dracut, Littleton, Lowell, Tewksbury and Westford.

The Division of Standards has mandated that all Weights and Measures Sealers perform visual inspections of all gas stations in their communities to check for evidence of card skimming devices that have been found in gas dispensers. The visual inspections will also serve as an opportunity for Sealers to educate station owners about what they can do to protect their business from skimming devices.

The Weights and Measures Department has produced a presentation that can be accessed by clicking the link below that educates consumers on what a skimmer is and what they can do to protect themselves while doing card based transactions.
