The Northern Middlesex Council of Governments, in conjunction with MassHighway and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), operates an annually updated traffic counting program for the region. Traffic Counts are important in providing information on the movement of people and vehicles along a roadway. These counts provide information for transportation planning studies conducted by NMCOG and other agencies throughout the region. Traffic counts are also essential in evaluating current operational conditions along roadway segments, and help in identifying any congestion issues. These counts are also used in determining seasonal adjustment factors and volume growth trends, which are used to develop future traffic growth rates.
